I finally got to try the famous Cube Restaurant! After being on my list for so long, I managed to get a booking at their new temporary home in Bryanston Shopping Centre. At R520 per person for 6 amazing courses, it’s definitely value for money and the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. (I celebrated my 31st birthday with my boyfriend)
It’s fine dining in a casual environment, with impeccable service and impressive synchronicity between the front and back of house. The evening flowed along flawlessly, and it took about 2 and a half hours for the two of us to get through the 6 courses.
Chef Dario and his team are really passionate about what they are doing with food, and Dario comes to your table to personally explain some of the dishes being served. Cube became somewhat of an institution in Parktown North, so when they ambitiously moved to Maboneng earlier this year, they didn’t do themselves any favours, as not many people want to venture into town during weekday evenings.
They plan on moving back to Parktown North early next year, in the same, but new and improved spot. In the meantime, you can still enjoy the tasting menus that they became famous for in their pop-up in Bryanston. Since they are in a shopping centre now, with a lot of daytime foot traffic, they have also introduced a breakfast and lunch menu.

Amuse Bouche – “Beef Nachos” – Steak Tartare with feta, on rice crackers with avo gel

Wood – Pork Belly, Game “Biltong” and Blackened chicken served with beans, chimichurri, dukkah and harissa.

Glass – Tapioca pokeh / White fish / Prawn / Dashi / Yuzu
Or
Amaranth / Mushroom / Beets / Truffle / Zatar (I had this one because I don’t eat fish)

Clay – Parfait / PB & J/ Earth / Zabaglione

Palate Cleanser – Berry sorbet with anise syrup

Stone – Fillet / Rarebit/ Mushroom / Truffle / Air

Cement – Chocolate / Citrus / Coffee / Vanilla / Caramel

Steel – Cheese and sweets

A birthday message just for me!!
I loved every single dish we were served except for the PB&J one – apparently even if a fancy chef prepares liver pate (or parfait in this case) I’m still going to hate it.
We left feeling stuffed and satisfied, and excited for them to reopen in their old spot in Parktown North next year. Definitely, add this place to your must-try list.
It may be important to mention that they do both a meat and vegetarian option, so pretty much everyone is catered for. They also ask about any dietary restrictions at the start of the meal.
