I would never have guessed that you would need to make a booking for a restaurant in Weltevreden Park on a Wednesday night, but newcomer to the area, La Rosa Mexican Grill and Tequileria, is so popular, that they are fully booked almost every night.
We were lucky enough to be squeezed in without a booking on the condition that we were done before 7, so we quickly set about ordering from their gigantic menu. Our first attempt at visiting this restaurant was thwarted by a power failure in the area, so we were quite eager to try the food.
The house shaken margarita I had on my first visit was sublime (hello generous tequila portion) but it was served in a rather boring glass in comparison to the Tropical margaritas. So on our second visit, I ordered a frozen mango margarita. This came in the coolest skull shaped glass. It wasn’t as nice as the original margarita as it was a lot sweeter, but it was still a pretty good cocktail.
On to the food. I LOVE Mexican food. A bit too much actually. We just ordered tacos. I wanted to order one of everything, but you know, “Summer Body “and all that. You can choose between two or three tacos, served in either a soft flour or corn shell.
I had the Carnitas, pulled pork, tomatillo salsa, onion and cilantro (coriander) served in flour tacos, and my boyfriend had the Campechano, grilled steak, sweet potato and Mexican chorizo with onion and coriander, served in the corn tacos. Both were packed full of flavour, filled with fresh, tasty ingredients. If you like it fiesty, I’m sure you could ask for some chilli, the food wasn’t spicy hot at all. (To my delight – I only like chili if it adds flavour, not tears)
The food was seriously good. Like close to El Burro good.
The service was equally good, our waitress was friendly and the food came out pretty quickly.
The restaurant itself is gorgeous. They really went all out with the decor. Everywhere you look, something colourful catches your attention. There is a bar area upstairs, where they serve a limited portion of the menu, and the focal point is a huge light fixture made from empty Corona bottles.
The verdict: Pick up the phone and make a booking at La Rosa Mexican, your taste buds will not be sad. They do put coriander on most things, so if that makes you gag in disgust, I’m sure you can beg them to leave it off :P.
