The next time you are travelling down the road on your way to Fourways Farmers Market, consider driving a few km’s further to Riversands Farmers Market instead. No, you won’t get the rad hipster vibe or have to fight off 10 other people for somewhere to sit, but you will get some great food choices, a huge area for your dogs (and kids) to run around in, and a table to sit at to enjoy your food. (Oh and parking, there are tons of places to park around the market)
Using Google Maps to get to the market is a bit of a fail (you end up at a closed road, with google insisting you turn right) but there are a number of small signs that point you in the right direction, or you can have a look at the map on their website.
There are not many market stalls yet, so don’t go with the intention of just shopping, rather go to sit and enjoy a meal. There are quite a few choices that cater for every obscure diet and preference from pizzas to pancakes to wors rolls to banting meals and treats for you dogs.
There are also stalls selling fresh cheese, fresh bread, homegrown veggies, free range double yolk eggs, R5 packets of fudge (including Milo flavour, which I enjoyed on a pancake), homemade nougat and fresh greek yoghurt.
My dogs had an absolute ball, and we got stopped a number of times to ask what breed they were (daschund cross staffie cross pug cross awesome if you were wondering).
There are play areas for kids, and you can host parties and weddings at the venue. There is also a petting zoo, a zipline through a forest, paintball and live music.
And before you panic, there is a bar selling craft beer. (the picture below is not the bar :P)
I had a milo and condensed milk pancake for brunch, while my boyfriend enjoyed a giant pulled pork sarmie. The food we had was good, and everyone else’s food looked amazing too.
Give this place a visit the next time you are looking for something to do on a Sunday in Joburg. They are open from 9 til 4.
