Hello, Captain FOMO reporting in. If I see somewhere new that I haven’t tried, and it’s close to where I live, I start getting a twitch in my eye and an itch in my feet. After seeing numerous reviews for the newly opened Pasta Cafe on the Jozi Restaurant’s Facebook Group, I knew I had to visit as soon as possible.
This unassuming restaurant is located next door to the Andiccios at Appletons Village on Malibongwe in Randburg. With a few tables and an open plan kitchen, this place seems more geared for takeaways, but you can sit down and enjoy your meal as well.
They make their own fresh pasta on site, and the owner/chef is on hand to personally prepare your meal with the assistance of his sous chefs.
The decor is of the hipster wooden tables copper pipe kind of vibe, and when we visited they were suffering from an unfortunate leak in the ceiling (new restaurant woes).
Food wise, you get tiny complimentary bread rolls to start your meal, before generous portions of pasta don your table.
I ordered the Primavera with Linguine, a deliciously fresh vegetarian dish with baby marrows, fresh tomatoes and peppers. My sister ordered the Polpette, i.e. meatballs with a tomato sauce, with Linguine. We both couldn’t finish our meals and got the leftovers as takeaway. They have freshly grated parmesan to top your pasta with, none of that powdered crap that other restaurants insist on serving
Prices are pretty reasonable, service is ok, the waitress seemed a bit confused at times, but I think she may be new to this whole restaurant gig. You can either order from their menu, or you can create your own pasta by checking options on a sheet of paper. (err’body wants you to fill in a form to order your food nowadays)
Give this place a try the next time you are in Randburg, they offer portions big enough for 1, 2 or 4 people and have gluten free options as well.
