A Churrasqueira used to be located on Main road in Rosettenville. Eating dinner there required parking your car in a dark side street, trusting a foreign car guard would ward off the Nigerian drug dealers and navigating past the multitude of prostitutes that hid in the shadows. The food was amazing, but the location was not what it used be back when it first opened. This is coming from someone who went to a nursery school in Rosettenville. #gangsta
Last year, the owners moved their restaurant to a house in the quiet suburbs of Brackenhurst. The new venue is beautiful, bright and clean and even boasts a playground area for the kids. For those of you who find other people’s children annoying, they have a “quieter” section of the restaurant, away from the play area.
We sat in this airy kid free zone for Saturday lunch, and had a thoroughly enjoyable meal. My mom didn’t complain once, and she is rather fussy with restaurants. (sorry ma, but it’s true – love you). A Churrasqueira is famous for their chicken, and I ordered the chicken trinchado, which is a half chicken, served with your choice of starch, covered in a garlicky wine sauce. It was delicious. I ate it all. A whole half chicken. I have no regrets.
Other meals enjoyed at the table included huge T-bone steaks and the beef trinchado.
The highlight of my visit included the waiter wheeling the giant perspex dessert cart to our table, laden with cakes and various other sweet treats. The only other time I have seen a dessert cart was at the revolving restaurant in durbs, I was quite excited. I resisted the temptation but my dad opted for a giant slice of the uncut lemon and poppy seed cake. It was beautiful. And tasty. He shared. 😉
So if you are looking to try some authentic Portuguese food at a restaurant whose logo kind of creeps me out, and has a grammar mistake on the front of their menu, then consider venturing to the south of Joburg. Or is that east of Joburg. Where does Alberton fall? Gah! Complicated.
The menu (and other reviews) can be found on Zomato.
