Burgers and Milkshakes are like Mickey and Minnie, summer and braais, rain and umbrellas. Iconic pairings, that have been around forever because they work so well together. This winter the Protea Fire and Ice Hotels (One in Joburg and one in Cape Town) have a range of delicious burger and milkshake pairings to entice your tastebuds.
I was invited to sample their new specials at the Fire and Ice in Melrose Arch, which include 4 new burgers, paired with new flavours of their famous shakes. If you have never had a milkshake from Fire and Ice, do yourself a favour, and try one. They throw everything from Lindt to Ferrero Rocher’s into their milkshakes, and you can order them by the pint (or half pint, for the lightweights).
The new burgers include a “Lamb”borghini , a minted lamb burger topped with warm brie cheese and glazed berries, the Bakkies Wors Burger, made with the juiciest boerewors mince served with deep fried mustard-coated onion rings and the Stars and Stripes Southern Fried Chicken Burger. There was another burger on my plate, whose name I can’t remember (and it wasn’t in the press release), but it was served with biltong and blue cheese.
Hands down, the best burger I tried was the Bakkies Wors Burger. It was full of flavour, and it really did taste like boerewors.
On the milkshake side, they are offering The Bees Knees, a blend of rich dark Lindt chocolate infused with a citrus syrup and chewy bits of honeycomb, the Ouma and Oupa infused with rooibos and honey and the Carnival with flavours of toffee apples and creamy homemade fudge.
Surprisingly, the rooibos milkshake was my favourite, and I don’t even like rooibos!! And I discovered that you can even order the milkshakes as a takeaway, so if you are on your lonesome, you don’t even have to sit awkwardly at their bar all by yourself.
The burgers and shakes are available at the hotels in Cape Town and Melrose Arch. The 200g burgers are R125 and the whopping 650ml shakes are R45 each.
If you live in Joburg, and would like to give a Fire and Ice milkshake a try, I have 5 milkshake vouchers to give away. All you need to do, is tell me what your ultimate milkshake flavour combination would be in the comments section below.
